National 4-H Center
7100 Connecticut Avenue
Chevy Chase, MD 20815
This conference will reflect on psychoanalytic clinical processes from the viewpoint of restoring and enhancing patients’ developmental capacities in the dual areas of self-experience and relational experience. The ICP+P Psychoanalytic Training Program is pleased to announce the two papers selected to be presented at the conference:
PAPER – Surviving My Countertransference: A Case of Mutual Transformation
by Monica Leonie Callahan, PhD
then
Discussion by Elizabeth Carr, APRN, MSN, BC
ICP+P Director Emeritus
PAPER – Leaning into the Pain: The Analyst’s Subjectivity and Developmental Transformation
by Marie Hellinger, MSW, LICSW
then
Discussion by Sandra Hershberg, MD
Chair of the Psychoanalytic Training Program
In the first hour and a half, each paper selected for the conference will be accompanied by an individual discussion and large group discussion. In the second half of the morning, participants will break into small groups led by graduates and faculty members from the ICP+P Psychoanalytic Training Program to reflect on the presentations in greater depth. In the last segment, we will come back together for sharing the range of responses from the small group discussions and thinking together as a large group.
From the presentations and related discussions, participants will be able to:
- Identify how the clinical engagement and clinical responsiveness enhanced at least one aspect of the patients’ developmental capacities.
- Identify at least one area of personal vulnerability in the presenters’ emotional responses to their patients and describe how they addressed their subjective responses within themselves and with their patients.
Based on attendance in small group discussion, participants will be able to:
- Reflect on how therapists’ emotional responsiveness to their patients can support or impede the developmental processes of psychoanalytic therapy.
- Identify at least one area of personal vulnerability that has come up in their own clinical interactions and reflect on how to manage their own subjective responses.
- State that, “I had the opportunity to ask questions about the presented material.”
This conference is intended for professionals at all levels of experience.
