Since Freud and Jung, the interpretation of dreams has been a crucial aspect of psychoanalytic treatment.  Our dreams reveal unconscious conflicts, internal fragmentations, and the dreamer’s deep connection to universal themes and cultural/historic legacies.  In some indigenous cultures, dreams represent the loss of land, cultural heritage and historic discontinuity.

In this workshop, we will expand our understanding of dreams as harbingers of developmental wounds, and as symbols and metaphors for unresolved attachment traumas.  We will utilize dreams to explore the habitual relational and behavioral patterns we engage in in order to conceal and protect these early vulnerabilities.  We will examine how dreamwork in the clinical process implicate both patient’s and therapist’s unconscious, and how we may use our patients’ dreams as supervision for the treatment.   When relevant, we will focus on nightmares, dreams in the aftermath of loss, lucid dreams, cultural identities, and what dreams can reveal about the dreamer’s attachment patterns.

During the workshop, Dr. Ringel will utilize clinical material and live demonstrations to actively engage the audience, and to show how we may process and work with patients’ dreams, the range of perspectives from which to work with dreams, and how the process may unfold intersubjectively.  We will also work in small groups to practice exploring dreams’ hidden meanings.

After the conference, there will be a luncheon and a community meeting where our fellowship, couple, CAPP and psychoanalytic programs will make short presentations.
