This experiential workshop introduces psychotherapists to several core concepts of Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) through the lens of agency, trauma, and attachment. Agency will be defined as the felt sense of being able to act on one’s own behalf in the world and in important relationships—a capacity that is often profoundly diminished in patients with histories of trauma, neglect, chronic misattunement, or disempowerment. Drawing on AEDP’s trauma-informed and attachment-based orientation, the workshop will explore how the therapeutic relationship can become a transformative context in which patients begin not only to feel safer, but also more alive, more present, and increasingly able to recognize and express desire, initiative, will, and selfhood. The presentation will include didactic teaching, clinical discussion, and a live supervision demonstrating how AEDP interventions can help foster resilience, agency, and authentic relational engagement.

 Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the role of agency, will, and desire within the framework of Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), including their relationship to maladaptive and adaptive core affective experiences.
  2. Differentiate developmental deficits in the formation of the self from defensive processes associated with repression, and explain how disruptions in attachment, recognition, and individuation may contribute to diminished agency and disempowerment in psychotherapy patients.
  3. Apply AEDP-informed interventions that foster the emergence of agency, will and desire to a clinical case presentation and supervision.
