Sponsored by The Contemporary Approaches to Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (CAPP) Program with Janna Sandmeyer, PhD, Case Presenter, and Sally Bloom-Feshbach, PhD, Discussant
Every therapeutic couple struggles to find that idiosyncratic bond that drives and holds together the treatment process and facilitates development and healthy growth. Dr. Richard Geist captures this clinical phenomenon in his construct of Connectedness, a consciously or nonconsciously felt sense of sharing and participating in another’s subjective emotional life while simultaneously experiencing another as participating in one’s own subjective life.
Dr. Geist expands Kohut’s theory that the analyst’s selfobject functions are experienced as part of the patient’s self organization and vice versa, and that this dyadic experience restores, strengthens, and buoys both the patient’s and therapist’s sense of self. Bringing Kohut’s thinking into the contemporary sphere, Dr. Geist maintains an attitude of protectiveness of the therapeutic relationship, and a deep appreciation of defenses. He challenges our capacity to open ourselves to our patients, and to allow them to take up residence in our emotional world. Using verbatim selections from a clinical hour, he will demonstrate how the mutative vitality and therapeutic action of the treatment both emerge from the Connectedness between patient and therapist.
This conference will highlight the clinical applicability of Dr. Geist’s concepts and emphasize Self Psychological and Relational approaches to clinical material.
At the conclusion of the conference, attendees will be able to:
- Describe how the concept of Connectedness facilitates the therapeutic process.
- Identify a Connectedness sensibility in clinical material.
- Describe the relationship between a Connectedness sensibility and Kohut’s theory of selfobject transferences.
- Discuss the ways in which therapists are challenged to be emotionally accessible to their patients.
- Articulate a self psychological approach to defenses.
- Describe how a protectiveness attitude facilitates emotional development in the treatment setting.
This conference is appropriate for clinicians at all levels of experience and offers 6 CE credits.
