October 2009 Newsletter
Note from the Director and Co-Director
Elizabeth Carr and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf
We have begun another exciting year and are already in full swing with all our operations. The new Board met in September and approved the operating budget for 2009-2010. Janet Dante announced that we ended last year with a surplus. Accordingly, the Board approved adding $5,000.to the reserve fund. We continue our commitment to building our reserve fund as we are able.
There are a number of new initiatives that are in the early planning stages including a major investment in redesigning our publicity materials. A number of suggestions from the membership have come before the Board for consideration. One example of a membership request involves including the membership roster on the ICP&P website on a voluntary basis. We are in the process of exploring the financial feasibility of this project.
We welcome your ideas and energy. So much of what has come to life within ICP&P begins with a request from one or more of our members. We encourage you to contact one of us or any member of the Board with your ideas and suggestions. Also, if you have a complaint, please let us know about that as well.
Note from the Secretary
Leslie Westbrook
In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory and on the website. Here are some highlights from the September 17th meeting:
- ICP&P finances are in the black. The Relational Institute had 84 persons registered as of the Board meeting.
- Scientific Day will be January 23, 2010, at the National 4-H Center. A second Saturday conference will be held on March 27th at the 4-H Center and the program, on Bowlby and Kohut, will be presented by Elizabeth Carr and Mauricio Cortina.
- Twenty-four new members have joined ICP&P as a result of the Relational Institute. The Board discussed ways to integrate new members into ICP&P.
- The deadline for receiving membership dues and information about members so that the new directories are updated is October 5th.
- The Consultation and Referral Service brochure is ready to go to the printer.
- The results of the Financial Survey were presented, and the Board encouraged Jeffrey Jay to present the results of the survey on Scientific Day.
Note from the Programs Co-Chairs
Sharon Ballard and Tripp Reed
Our second program of the year will take place on Saturday, December 5, 2009. This conference, which coincides with the second Relational Perspectives Institute weekend, will feature Donnel Stern, PhD. His presentation, Partners in Thought: Witnessing, Enactment and Unformulated Experience, will focus on therapeutic action from a Relational perspective. We encourage you to register early for this conference.
We will be offering two programs that are free of charge to ICP&P members beginning with Scientific Day scheduled for Saturday, January 23, 2010. We are very pleased that Lauren Brandt has offered to chair the review committee for this event. Scientific Day has always been an enriching clinical forum for our members and we hope that many of you will consider submitting papers. As always, we look forward to an opportunity for lively, stimulating clinical dialogue.
The second conference, offered at no charge to our membership, will be held on March 27, 2010. Elizabeth Carr and Mauricio Cortina will be present their fascinating new paper, Kohut & Bowlby: The Men, Their Ideas and the Clinical Exchange. This presentation will explore the historical and personal contexts that contributed to the major theoretical ideas of these prominent thinkers. Clinical material will be an integral part of the presentation.
The ICP&P Board voted to sponsor the first Bruce Wine Memorial Conference in the fall of 2010. This full day, experiential program will feature William Coburn, PhD. More details will follow as this program is fully developed.
News and Notes
A Message from Ann Aukamp
I leave ICP&P with many fond memories of good interactions, interesting presentations, and enjoyable study group meetings. Don and I are taking the momentous step of relocating as we have long planned to the family house in Woods Hole, MA of which we have been the lucky recipients. We are commuting weekly between Maryland and Massachusetts while our house in Silver Spring is on the market. We expect to be full-time in Massachusetts by the end of November.
While I do not want to re-create a weekly therapy practice in Woods Hole, I look forward to the opportunity to write some, and to do occasional consultations and brief interventions. My new address is 25 Nobska Road, Woods Hole, MA 02543. My new telephone number is 508-548-4269. My email will change once we close out our Verizon account in Maryland. Then my new email address will be aauka@comcast.net. I look forward to staying in touch with ICP&P, and to perhaps come back for occasional conferences.
