May 2009 Newsletter
Note from the Director and Co-Director
Elizabeth Carr and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf
As this year’s term for the ICP&P Board draws to a close, we would like to express our thanks to several dedicated Board members who are stepping down. For the last four years, Kathy Beck and Judy Hoffman have served as Co-Coordinators of Membership. Judy has been a steady welcoming presence to all the new members, as well as maintaining relationships with the membership at large. She has advocated for individual member needs as well as providing a pivotal voice in many important Board decisions. Kathy Beck has done an exceptional job in the operations of the ICP&P study groups including recruiting leaders and generating descriptions of each study group for the Newsletter and the website. Additionally, both Judy and Kathy have pitched in to provide assistance in some of the small tasks that are essential to the continued smooth running of the organization. We thank them for their service to the Board and to the ICP&P membership.
Janice Sanchez has served as Secretary for the last two years. The Secretary is responsible for documenting all the Board decisions and taking minutes at the Board meetings. As our discussions are lively and far-reaching, this is not an easy task. Janice has done a wonderful job fulfilling this role and we appreciate her service to the Board.
Leslie Smith joined the Board last fall as the Member-in-Training Board Representative. She has participated in the Board discussions and her insights have been very helpful. We have enjoyed Leslie’s participation on the Board.
ICP&P Graduation is scheduled for May 31. Graduation is the culmination of our academic year and, as such, is a great occasion for celebration. We congratulate all the graduates on their outstanding accomplishment. We also want to thank the faculty for their commitment and dedication to our training endeavors. We hope many of you will join us at this festive event. Please RSVP as indicated on the invitation you have received in the mail.

In an effort to keep the membership informed about issues that are being discussed by the ICP&P Board, a brief summary of each meeting is published in the Newsletter. If there are items about which you have questions, opinions or concerns, please feel free to contact a Board member. We welcome your input. All Board members are listed in the front of the ICP&P Directory. Here are some highlights from the April 16th meeting:
- It was announced that we have 39 registrants for the Relational Perspectives Institute!
- We had some extensive discussion about compensation for those who will be leading, teaching and working for the RPI. Our plans for this will set a precedent for future programs.
- We have 99 people registered for our Annual Spring Conference with Beatrice Beebe.
- Some of the Saturday morning conference plans for next year are still being discussed.
- Some questions to be considered at a future meeting are: Could we have reduced membership fees for agency workers? Could we start a self psychology study group for agency workers?

New Member Introductions
Jeffrey Jay
Richard Ogden is rejoining ICP&P, lured back by the collegiality and educational opportunities that our organization offers. Richard maintains a private practice for adolescents and adults in Bethesda. In addition, he supervises graduate students at GWU’s Psy.D. program and is on the staff at Sibley Hospital. Outside of work, his focus has been on raising his three daughters, the youngest of whom is now a high school junior. As her entry into college approaches, he is looking forward to increasing his professional activities and working on his tennis game.
Gwendolyn Pla, a new member of two ICP&P study groups, has been accepted into the Psychoanalytic Training Program, and attends conferences, while teaching classes in nutrition at Howard University. A full commitment? Maybe for some, but it wouldn’t surprise you if you read her resume which reports a BS in Chemistry, an MS in Biochemistry, a Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences, and an M.S.W. Trained as a scientist, Gwen wanted a "deeper understanding of human motivation," which ultimately led her to her own analysis and graduate training in psychotherapy. Fascinated, I had to ask how she puts together her multi-leveled understanding of a client; she answered that if a person comes to treatment with nutritional issues, she stays with that, but if the person is not moving, then, as a therapist, she "starts to move" toward the unappreciated psychodynamics. After a few moments of conversation, I was not surprised that, when faced with stasis, Gwen moves forward. Gwen has a private practice in Silver Spring for adults and families.
Ron Vande Loo is returning to ICP&P after a hiatus, or perhaps, for those who know him, and his interests in intimacy (especially couples therapy), poetry, and the rich contribution of Buddhism, it is better to say he returns to a place he never left; after all, Ron met his wife, Darlene Atkins, in an ICP&P (Elizabeth Carr) study group in 1996. Close to many in the community, Ron felt a particular desire to rejoin ICP&P after the loss of Bruce Wine this past year. In his therapy practice, Ron enjoys working with individuals and couples, using his training in self, relational, and developmental psychology. When asked, he was kind enough to forward a short poem (and its accompanying commentary), befitting his explorations of reflection and connection. It is printed here also as a late, but mindful tribute to April which is National Poetry Month.
Intimacy

the interior claimed

the interior scene
so begins intimacy;
Ron Vande Loo April 2009
The semicolons at the beginning and the end of the poem imply the open-ended but not quite seamless nature of the relational process, a process that begins prior to any wording and continues beyond words – a moment’s glimpse of a larger sentence. The recurring undisturbed "is" reflects the idealizations that become moment-to-moment seamless expectations until there is the inevitable disruption of "is not", an injury core to the difficult but rich discovery and co-creation process of intimacy.
