Summer 2010
Note from the Director and Co-Director
Roger Segalla and Maxine Ellenberg Arnsdorf
It's summertime and ICP&P is buzzing with activity in preparation for the 2010-2011 programming year. The three training programs (psychotherapy, psychoanalytic and couples) have finalized their curricula and the faculty members are putting together their teaching units. The new program coordinators (Tricia Olsen and Marilyn Voigt) are busy finalizing the details of the fall programs, and various committees of the Board are meeting to plan programs and marketing for 2011-2012.
Enrollment for the new two-year study group cycle is well underway. The use of survey monkey to collect study group selections went quite smoothly. By now, the 98 people who registered should have heard about their group assignments. (Please contact Dorothy Wine if you selected preferences but have not received an email regarding your placement). If you have not yet signed up, it is not too late; many groups still have spaces available. Please contact Dorothy Wine at dawine99@aol.com or 571-723-6424 for further information or assistance.
This year, we will be publishing member information on our website for the first time. We hope this will make it easier for Members-in-Training to find supervisors in a timely fashion. This information will also be available to anyone who visits our website. Your membership dues invoice packet included an additional information page requesting information for this purpose. Please complete the form as soon as possible and return it with your dues payment. Please note that inclusion in the website directory is optional; only people with completed forms will be listed.
We want to encourage all of our members to come to our annual Pot Luck kick-off event. This year, we are meeting on Sunday, September 12th from 1 to 4 pm at the Chevy Chase Town Hall. Please join us for brunch and a town hall meeting. This informal setting provides a wonderful way for members to reconnect with colleagues and to meet newer members. Information regarding sign-up for this event appears later in the Newsletter.
That's all for now. We hope you are all enjoying your summer and we look forward to seeing you in the fall.
Remembering Floyd Galler
Curtis Bristol
Floyd Bruce Galler died at 76 while snorkeling in Cancun, Mexico. The official cause was drowning. But like the mystery of death itself, it is not a full account for he was a good swimmer and with his family at the time. He just went down, disappeared, and was recovered dead.
I remember as yesterday attending the weddings of their three children, the births of grand children. Floyd and Nancy were so happy and the rooms were filled with their long time friends, young and old, exciting ideas and promises of tomorrow. And now I am turned to the immutable past and not the promise of the future.
We were candidates together at the Baltimore-Washington Institute, faculty at Georgetown Medical School, founding members of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and most meaningful to me our joint founding of the twenty-five year Woodstock Study Group. The history tells a lot: Freud to Lichtenberg.
Floyd was an independent psychoanalytic thinker and was adept at neuropsychiatry too. Respectful of tradition yet searching for new perspectives his mind was brilliant, focused and challenging. He could be gently mischievous and humorous. He was as engaged with literature, theatre, current events, English history and politics as with psychiatry and psychoanalysis. His work with the DC Courts employed his skills in the assessment and treatment of disturbed, disadvantaged youths. This appeared to be such a clash with the office practice among the more privileged. But it never was for Floyd. He had the capacity of compassion, empathy and an understanding for the mind wherever he encountered life's complexities.
Floyd loved the good things of life too, the hearty times drinking, dancing, dining, attending the movies or theater and especially discussing presidential politics, British history and the American Revolution.
Floyd was a passionate rower like those you see out on the Potomac at 5AM when headed for an early flight at National. One summer day he wanted me to "share" his enthusiasm for gracefully gliding over the smooth Potomac. My one time in the scull with him I remember as an uncoordinated, wandering mind and feeling foolish losing the paddle let alone getting the stroke. The experience of coach and student took an excruciating two hours to conclude. Floyd's wry parting comment: "Another dimension of friendship isn't important."
I think now how many dimensions I had with Floyd, how much we had in common in our time together, and how much he had with others in completely different dimensions as unique with them as with me. I learned of his death the day after it occurred and had the task of informing others. After the shock and disbelief, each had an unusual vignette to tell about their experience with Floyd, so different from my own, to demonstrate his diversity.
We all join to remember Floyd in our own way and to share a deep heartfelt sense of profound loss with his wife, Nancy, their daughters, Heather and Rebecca, son, Eric, and five grandchildren.
