A Dialogue on Couples Therapy from the Perspective of Two Complementary Contemporary Theories

Short Course

with Mary O’Farrell, PhD and John Gualtieri, PhD

Date: Friday, October 14, 2011
Time: 11:30am – 2:30pm
Location: ICP&P Office, 4601 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Suite 8, Washington, DC 20008

Psychotherapy with couples presents many challenges. It is difficult work for the therapist and for the couple who are seeking help. The purpose of the course is to present an overview of Self Psychology Theory and Control Mastery Theory. We will apply both theories to couples therapy. A case will be presented and discussed from both theoretical positions. Questions and discussion of case material are encouraged.

Based on the content of this short course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss Self Psychology and its application to couples therapy.
  • Discuss Control Mastery Theory and its application to couples therapy.
  • Compare and contrast both theories and correctly apply aspects of each to the treatment of couples.

Dr. O’Farrell and Dr. Gualtieri co-teach in the ICP&P Couples Training Program. They concentrate on therapy with difficult couples. They have over thirty years combined experience in treating couples and are both experts in the theories they present. Both are ICP&P members. Dr. Gualtieri is a member of the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group which educates and trains practitioners and researchers in Control Mastery Theory.
